Great basic setup,
I am in the process of ordering a replacement battery for the BASEMENT WATCHDOG system I have owned for about 8-9 years, and wanted to leave a review on the overall product. My basement isn’t finished, but after experiencing some unique water issues, I learned of the battery powered backup system by a handyman that had one of his own. I expected to have to replace the entire system by now, but it has been better than advertised. I’ve never even had to add water to the battery. I recently purchased a replacement pump thinking it has to fail sometime soon, but it’s still in the box…Just in case. The battery indicator just signaled that the battery has failed, so I’m here looking to order a new one. The product description said 5-7 yrs was what you could expect out of the battery, so it’s gone above and beyond the call. This system has saved me from having 2 or 3 major backups from the main pump failing and some extended power outages. The one criticism is the constant beep of the alarm when the power goes off. That has been solved with the new version I have on the shelf which has an on/off switch. If you have a finished basement and a sump, I can’t imagine not owning a backup.

|Cheap charger kills batteries,
I have had this for about 4 years now and it has done what I needed it to. What I like about it is that it is efficient and will pump a long time. What I don’t like is the battery they sell along side it and the charging system.
As with any battery, the battery will require maintenance. It needs to be kept charged and distilled water needs to be periodically added. You don’t have to use the do-it-yourself battery they recommend. Any quality deep-cycle battery will do if you don’t mind losing the acid level sensor, which you need to attach to the positive terminal. I currently am using a Napa Stowaway, made by Exide.
The charger itself is a bit flaky, I periodically use a separate charger (about $25) to fully charge the battery. The pump has functioned when I needed it, during power outages and when the float stuck on my Zoeller pump. The alarm and pump have worked as designed.
One reviewer recommends a water backup, but I don’t think that is a great idea. During recent floods in my area, city water was shut off before power. And if you go on long vacations or have to abandon your home in an emergency you should be shutting off the water first. As much of a pain maintaining a battery system can be, I feel it is still the best option available.
To maintain efficiency, this pump is rather small and doesn’t appear to be all that durable. I will probably replace it in another few years to be safe.
If I were to buy another one, I would probably spend more money. But this one has done the job.

Well this thing killed a new $200 battery in two years and is no longer useful. I would have been better off spending money on a better system with a smart charger instead of a new battery for this system with the trickle charger. Trickle chargers are not made to be hooked up for years on end, that will kill a battery quickly. Live and learn. Also, it didn’t tell me my battery was bad until after I tried running it. My guess is that it’s useful life was about a year or less.
So one star only.

|High Maintenance Battery,
As the other reviewer noted, the battery requires a lot of maintenance. I have had to open the battery to add distilled water to the sulfuric acid solution every 6 months or so. Sulfuric acid is hazardous, and I don’t feel the average person should handle it. There has to be a better way.
